Weekday fasting
Each weekday belongs to a planet and is traditionally given to a deity. Many people fast on the day of the planet they wish to appease or the deity they hold dear.
| Day | Planet | Deity |
|---|---|---|
| Sunday | Sun (Surya) | Surya Dev |
| Monday | Moon (Chandra) | Lord Shiva |
| Tuesday | Mars (Mangal) | Hanuman |
| Wednesday | Mercury (Budha) | Lord Ganesha |
| Thursday | Jupiter (Guru) | Lord Vishnu |
| Friday | Venus (Shukra) | Goddess Lakshmi and Santoshi Mata |
| Saturday | Saturn (Shani) | Shani Dev and Hanuman |
Practices differ between families and regions; a weekday fast is usually kept from sunrise until the evening puja.
